GLYPHS ALONG THE CAMINO

These paintings were made with local artist and poet Israel Haros Lopez. Israel has created his own modern vocabulary based on Mayan and Aztec glyphs while exploring his Xicano cultural heritage. Glyphs are pictographs or “picture-words.” Mayan and Aztec cultures used glyphs as their form of writing. For example, emojis are a form of modern glyph language. Students painted ancient glyphs, versions of Israel’s glyphs, or created their own glyphs. Fall 2019
