My career weaves together my passion for community-based arts, teaching, and social justice work.  Extensive experience in community advocacy and teaching is balanced with non-profit program development, as well as my own creative practice.


TEACHING & COMMUNITY-BASED EDUCATION


SANTA FE PUBLIC SCHOOLS, Santa Fe, NM 2019-present

Art Teacher: Teach contemporary and culturally-engaged art to Middle School students at El Camino Real Academy, a bilingual public school. Created Art & Community course that connects students with community artists and arts organizations and culminates in art reflecting students’ communities and lives. Also teach reading to English Language Learners. K-12 License level 3A, with certifications in Visual Arts, Language Arts, Social Studies, TESOL and Bilingual certification.


WISE FOOL NEW MEXICO, Santa Fe, NM 2014-2018

Managing Director: Initiated the doubling of Wise Fool’s studio space and commensurate increase in staffing, programs, and budget. Managed fundraising and grant-writing activities. Directed marketing and implemented new quality and outcomes assessment and registration management system. Liaison to community collaborations and board, including recruitment doubling size of board.


RAILYARD STEWARDS, Santa Fe, NM 2010-2014

Director of Education and Outreach, Interim Executive Director: Developed programs for the Railyard Park, including workshops, school collaborations, and volunteer activities. Developed partnerships with SITE Santa Fe, Youthworks, Earthcare, Farmers Market, and other colleague organizations which led to a 300% increase in the number of youth participants. Coordinated Railyard Art Committee activities.


RIVER SOURCE, Santa Fe, NM 2003-2010

Executive Administrator: Provided youth leadership education to support watershed health throughout New Mexico. Program development included the Watershed Education Network, No Child Left Inside: NM, “It’s My Water Future” Youth day at the Roundhouse, and statewide EcoWISER.org database.

Managed 10-year College Reaccreditation process, including seven self-study committees, and the 200 page Self-Study Report with a focus on assessment of student learning. Developed academic partnerships with high schools through concurrent enrollment, career pathways, and contract courses at SFCC. Taught English courses, GED preparation, and English as a Second Language.


LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF SANTA FE, Santa Fe, NM 1993-1999

Program Coordinator: Facilitated program serving 700 students and 350 volunteer tutors, including a prison tutoring project, a community-based learning lab, and numerous workplace and neighborhood tutoring sites.

Coordinating Committee Member: Organized resources for the Summer Institute on Discipline-Based Art Education.

ADVOCACY & POLICY


SANTA FE CITY IMMIGRANT TASK FORCE 1999-2000

Task Force Member: Appointed to serve on a city task force addressing immigration issues impacting the Santa Fe community, making recommendations to city council, including establishment of sanctuary city status.

FRIENDS COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL LEGISLATION, Washington, DC 1988-1990

Legislative Associate: Developed congressional lobbying strategies and grassroots outreach programs on foreign policy issues including United Nations and World Bank debt and development policy, and Southern Africa. Assisted in a national pre-conference to the UN Conference on Environment and Development/Earth Summit.


WOMEN’S CAMPAIGN FUND/WOMEN’S MEDIA PROJECT, Washington, DC 1987-1988

Research Associate: Managed donor files and assisted in fundraising campaigns. Tracked media coverage of issues of concern to women’s rights. Attended press conferences and prepared briefings.


VETERANS' AFFAIRS COMMITTEE, US SENATE, Washington, DC 1987

Research Associate: Drafted legislation and Senatorial speeches and prepared briefings for Congressional hearings on health care, housing, and women veterans. Handled constituent concerns.


MEXICAN-AMERICAN OPPORTUNITY FOUNDATION, East LA, CA 1986

Research Assistant: Wrote position papers and legislative briefings in support of reforming US immigration law. Organized a conference in Morelia, Mexico.


ARTS COOPERATIVES, Latin America 1991

Volunteer Consultant: Developed marketing and organizational concepts with a women’s cooperative in Guatemala, a community museum and arts cooperative in Ecuador, and a women’s craft cooperative in Costa Rica.


CITY COUNCIL, South Central District Office, Los Angeles 1985

Program Assistant: Created a traveling multi-media display on the history of the Watts community in remembrance of the 20th anniversary of the Watts Riots, with a special focus on art created from the wreckage of the riots.
